Home › Line Personalities

Within each category, lines develop a personality: the kind of guest they design for, the mood on board and what they spend their money on. Matching that personality to yours matters more than any single feature.

Family-Focused Lines

Family lines build ships around children and teens: supervised clubs by age group, family cabins that sleep four or more, splash areas, character or theme experiences and early dinner seatings. Disney Cruise Line is the best-known example, and several mainstream brands put heavy investment into water parks and kids’ programs. What to check: club ages and hours, whether there is a charge for late-night or nursery care, and how many cabins connect.

Adult-Focused Lines

Some lines simply do not cater to children. Virgin Voyages, for instance, says its ships are for travelers 18 and over. Others accept children but attract few of them because there is no kids’ club or water slide. If peace and quiet is the priority, an adult-oriented line removes a lot of guesswork — though you trade away the lively family atmosphere some couples enjoy.

Food-Led Lines

For some lines, dining is the headline: multiple restaurants included in the fare, celebrated chefs, cooking classes and wine programs. When you compare these, ask how many venues are included versus charged, whether reservations are needed, and how the main dining room compares with the specialty rooms. The answer can swing the value of a fare a long way.

Wellness is a related personality: spas, thermal suites, fitness classes and lighter menus are central on some lines and an add-on on others.

On some lines the spa is a centerpiece; on others it is one amenity among many.

Active and Adventure Lines

Active travelers look for kayaking, hiking and cycling ashore, ships that can reach small harbors, and expedition teams who lead landings. Some mainstream ships add rock walls, surf simulators and sports courts on board. Be clear about which you want: adventure in the destination, or activity on the ship.

Active lines put the adventure ashore and on the water.

Enrichment and Culture

Lines aimed at curious travelers bring guest lecturers, port talks, local performers and longer port calls, sometimes overnight. Viking, for example, includes a shore excursion in every port on its ocean voyages. These lines appeal to travelers who choose a cruise for the places more than the ship.
